TikTok Beauty Hacks To Take Your Summer Makeup Game to the Next Level

Beauty hacks — effectively, tricks to save you time and/or provide a solution to a beauty problem — are as old as time, passed down from generations of beauty fanatics to the next. Some ancient beauty hacks — like using dark lead as mascara or crocodile poop for facials — have (thankfully) been discredited. But many — like egg white face masks and body sugaring to remove hair — have stood the test of time.

Dedicated to short-form videos, the social media platform is a treasure trove of strategies for simplifying your routines, improving applications and generally taking your makeup to a new level of enchanting.

Want to learn how to perfect cat eyes? Make your foundation resist sweat? Get flowy beach curls using socks? There’s a hack for these, and we found them on TikTok.

To learn more, read on for a roundup of our favorite beauty hacks and makeup tips we’ve learned from TikTok:

Our Favorite TikTok Makeup Hacks

1. Curl Your Hair With Socks

Here’s the sock curl tutorial. This video was longer, but I had to cut it down.. ope #sockcurls #tutorial #fyp #foryоu #hair

Search #SockCurls on TikTok, and you’ll find hundreds of videos of TikTokers showing off their bouncy beach locks. Their secret? Socks.

According to a tutorial posted by TikTok user Ally Kay, you can get long, luscious curls by dividing damp hair into even sections and wrapping strands around socks in a crisscross motion. Secure the hair at the bottom with hair ties and let it dry overnight. Remove the socks the next morning to unveil your bouncy curls.

The cool thing about this hack is you don’t really need to buy anything — you just need to dig up some old socks — depending on how thick your hair is, you may need between two and four. You might also want to spritz on some beach spray.

2. Put Your Makeup on Backward.

Here’s another magical TikTok hack that’s got our beauty editors all in a tizzy. Apparently, you can prevent your foundation from creasing and running by putting on your base products in backward order. It’s ideal for creating longer lasting summer makeup looks that don’t sweat off.

Your process should look like this: First, you dab on a light layer of powder. Then, spritz on a setting spray. And then add primer and foundation. Celebrity makeup artist Tommy explained how the technique works in an interview with Allure, “Basically, the layering of powder, spray, primer, and foundation helps to ‘seal’ the skin underneath, to control shine and smooth texture, and ‘reinforce’ the layers on top.”

3. Use Coconut Oil As Makeup Remover.

Long before TikTok or even the internet, coconut oil has been celebrated for its magical beauty-boosting properties. Now, TikTokers are toting it as a pre-shampoo hair mask, lip moisturizer and — this one we hadn’t heard before — a natural makeup remover

To use coconut oil as a makeup remover, apply an even layer to your face and use a soft, warm washcloth to gentle massage off mascara, eyeliner, blush and foundation. Rise, add a serum and moisturize.

4. Heal Sunburns with Whipped Shea Butter.

Because shea butter is rich in vitamins A, E and K, it naturally regenerates skin cells. Shea butter also contains triterpenes, which are naturally occurring chemical compounds are thought to deactivate collagen fiber destruction and minimize the appearance of wrinkles.

To unlock the magical power of shea butter, rub it on a clean face — Raw, unrefined shea butter is easy to spread. Or, try this TikToker’s whipped body butter recipe.

5. Blend Your Foundation With Lubricant.

Of the many summer makeup looks on TikTok, this one might be among the most controversial. In a series of recent videos, users have been mixing their foundation with — wait for it — sexual lubricant.

According to users, the unconventional combination makes the foundation glide on extra smooth and makes your skin look radiant. Of course, we had to try this tip for ourselves and have to admit: our skin looks dewy and summery.

  • Durex Massage & Play 2 in 1 Lubricant Intensify ($13.94) at Amazon

6. Apply Eye Shadow With Lip Balm.

Because lip balms are made with ingredients like cocoa butter and petroleum, they are a perfect medium for applying powder cosmetics like eye shadow and blush — as TikTok users are demonstrating

Here’s how to try this beauty hack: Dip your lip balm directly into your eye shadow or blush before gliding the pigment across your eyelids or cheeks. By blending the two products together, you intensify the color, add shine and make the application smoother.

We gave this one a try and found dipping lip balm into pressed eye shadow made the powder gooey. We had more luck dabbing a little bit of balm on our finger and using that to apply eye shadow to the lid — the result was less messy and easier to shape.

7. Get Perfect Cat Eyeliner With Tape.

TokTok: @kat_longoria

Perfect winged eyeliner can be tricky even for the most seasoned applicators. Naturally, TikTokers have flooded the app with video makeup tips on how to master cat eyeliner every time. One of our favorites of these TikTok makeup hacks is accomplished by using tape.

As this TikTok user demonstrates in her eyeliner tutorial, you can use tape to create a stencil outline for a picture-perfect wing.

  • Maybelline New York Makeup Eyestudio Lasting Drama Gel Eye Liner ($7.75) at Amazon
