Too often fine jewellery goes from sparkling beautiful, dazzling and new, to black, dirty and “eewww.” To avoid wearing your favorite pieces after a short while, proper care is the key. Please consider the following tips to ensuring a long and loving relationship with your jewellery.
o First and foremost you should always buy the best quality of jewellery that you can afford and not compromise on cost factors. Some jewellery may come at a very low price, but on using it you may realize how poorly it is made.
o All fine jewellery should be treated with care. After wearing your jewellery, wipe with a clean, soft, barely damp cloth to remove any dirt or cosmetics.
o Always protect your jewellery from scratching, sunlight, harsh blows; both heat as well as cold. Also be careful that your jewellery does not come in contact with chemicals like perfumes, hairsprays etc.Do not sleep in your jewellery – you may damage it.
o The best way to store your expensive jewellery is in a soft lined box or pouch. Try to keep pieces apart, so that they don’t rub together or tangle up.
o Chlorine in the pool can damage your jewellery so, avoid wearing it while swimming. Also avoid wearing rings when cleaning, gardening or while playing sports.
On inspection if you spot a loose gemstone, diamond or a weak prong get it repaired before it is too late. It is very important to get your jewellery examined at least once a year and also get it cleaned by your jeweller.
o Before donning on your pearl jewellery finish with applying cosmetics, hair sprays and perfume. Upon removal of the jewellery wipe it carefully with a soft cloth to remove traces of any dirt and then store them.
o Pearls and pearl jewellery are precious and should be taken utmost care of.Store them flat, preferably in a silk pouch. A knot between each pearl is ineluctable, as it helps to prevent loss of pearls if the string should break. Take strings of pearls to your jeweler from time to time for inspection and restringing.
o You can wash your pearl jewellery with mild soap and water or you can use a mild commercial solution. Do not clean pearls with chemicals, abrasives or solvents.
o Beaded necklaces such as gemstone weather precious or semi precious should be stored flat like pearls in silk pouches. If the string breaks, let your jeweller restring them for you. While buying expensive beaded jewellery see that there are a knots between each bead, so that if the string breaks you don’t loose many beads.
o After wearing, wipe your gemstones thoroughly with a clean soft, slightly damp cloth. This will enhance the gemstone’s lusture and ensure that your jewellery is clean before storing them individually in soft pouches.
o Do not expose your precious gemstone pieces to salt water or harsh chemicals. These chemicals may slowly erode the finish and polish of gemstones. Hairsprays and perfumes cause jewellery to become dull.
o Avoid wearing heavy earrings if your earlobes are slit. Either get them stitched from a good physician or temporarily use stick on lifters to protect ear from being further damage.
